The Archaeological Experience Museum, or Puratatva Anubhav Sangrahalay, spans the 2,500-year-old historical journey of Vadnagar. Developed by the Union ministry of culture in collaboration with the state directorate of archaeology and museums, the museum is designed to present Vadnagar’s rich and multi-layered cultural history through artefacts discovered during excavations, an official statement said.
Built at an estimated cost of Rs 298 crore, the four-storey structure covers an area of 12,500 sq m and houses more than 5,000 artefacts. A permanent shed has been built to display remains from Vadnagar’s archaeological excavations, alongside newly developed tourism facilities. The museum also consists of nine thematic galleries showcasing art, sculptures and linguistic heritage of the region.
Shah will also inaugurate the ‘Prerna Sankul’, a project developed at a cost of Rs 72 crore. The school in which PM Modi received his early education was set up in 1888 and was renovated by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to blend modern education with technology. As part of the study tour, students from across the country visit for a week to learn and explore. To date, 36 groups, comprising 720 students and 360 teachers, have visited, an official statement said. The curriculum, developed by IIT Gandhinagar, includes nine value-based subjects.
Shah will also inaugurate a Rs 33.5 crore sports complex that has a variety of indoor and outdoor sports facilities like an eight-lane, 400m synthetic athletic track, an astroturf football field and dedicated spaces for kabaddi, kho-kho and volleyball. Construction of a hostel is also under way, to provide accommodation to 100 boys and 100 girls, the statement said. In addition to these projects, Shah will visit the 17th century Hatkeshwar Temple in Vadnagar town, the statement said.
A section of the Buddhist Circuit, which was introduced in Gujarat, passes through Vadnagar. Excavations by Gujarat’s archaeological department revealed the remains of a Buddhist monastery in the town. Recently, the Vadnagar railway station was developed, and the 4,500-year-old Sharmishtha Lake now has facilities like boating and an open-air theatre.
