Washington’s National Zoo set to receive two giant pandas from China

Date:

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute in Washington, DC, is gearing up for the arrival of two giant pandas from China this week. The pandas, named Bao Li and Qing Boa, are male and female born just a month apart in 2021. Both are described as lively 3-year-olds with a love for climbing.

Expert preparations

To ensure a smooth transition, Chinese experts have made several visits to the zoo. They evaluated the facilities, food sources and breeding programs to confirm that everything was ready for the pandas. The experts also checked that the climbing areas were adequate for the animals’ needs.

 Journey Underway

According to Xinhua, on Monday evening, the pandas started their journey with private transport from the China Giant Panda Conservation Research Center to Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport. They are currently preparing for a special flight to their new home in DC.

Arrival timing

While the exact arrival time has not been disclosed for safety reasons, the pandas will be accompanied by two breeders and veterinarians from China. Their presence will help the pandas adapt to their new surroundings.

Symbol of diplomacy

The addition of Bao Li and Qing Boa follows the recent arrival of Yun Chaun and Xin Bao at the San Diego Zoo, marking the first time in 21 years that pandas have come to the US. This ongoing collaboration in panda conservation is seen as a positive gesture of goodwill between the US and China.
