Ahmedabad: Two years after a woman died following a Caesarean-section, the gynaecologist who carried out the procedure has been booked for culpable homicide. Police on Thursday registered an FIR against Dr Raman Bharwad, booking him for the death of Varsha Chauhan, 23, from Kheda’s Bhatha village, during the operation done at his private hospital in Vaso. The health department had prohibited the doctor from performing C-section operations due to earlier similar incidents, according to case details. The FIR registered on a complaint filed by Varsha’s father Bhupat Vaghela, states that she was admitted to Dr Bharwad’s hospital on April 9, 2023, after experiencing labour pains. Family members, including her husband, Bhavesh, took her to the govt hospital in Matar, but due to absence of a doctor there, were referred to the private hospital in Vaso.Dr Bharwad allegedly informed the family that a C-section was necessary. After discussion, the family agreed. The operation took place around 2.30pm on April 9, 2023, and a healthy baby girl was born. However, the woman did not regain consciousness after the procedure. The family noticed bleeding, but Dr Bharwad had left the hospital, the complaint states. Varsha’s condition deteriorated, and she died. At around 1.30pm the next day, Dr Bharwad declared the woman dead, the complaint states. The post-mortem report from Ahmedabad Civil Hospital stated that Varsha died from excessive bleeding during the operation. The family collected information and found that Dr Bharwad, under an official order from the health department issued in Oct 2019, had been barred from performing caesarean operations due to similar incidents. Further, a district health officer’s report confirmed that Dr Bharwad’s hospital staff were not qualified to perform caesarean operations and that the hospital lacked necessary anaesthesia facilities. The family has alleged that Dr Bharwad knowingly violated the order and put the patient’s life at risk. The health department is also conducting an internal inquiry into his actions.
