Work starts on 155km stormwater line for Sanand GIDC | Ahmedabad News

Ahmedabad: Sanand industrial estate in Ahmedabad district witnessed heavy waterlogging that lasted for about three days during the monsoon last year. To rectify this problem, which impacted the operations of the industrial units there, the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) has initiated a stormwater drainage project spanning 155 km, with an investment of Rs 177 crore. It plans to finish work in crucial areas before the next monsoon season.
GIDC managing director Rahul Gupta said, “A 155-km stormwater drainage line will be laid in Sanand industrial estate to address the waterlogging issues experienced during monsoon. We are going to implement a priority drainage line in critical zones before the onset of the next monsoon. This step is expected to provide immediate relief to industries and prevent future disruptions.”
To prevent waterlogging in GIDC areas, the GIDC is collaborating with local authorities and various state govt departments to manage water flow from adjacent regions.
Recently, GIDC senior officials conducted a meeting with Sanand Industries Association (SIA). The SIA president Ajit Shah said that the stormwater drainage line would be laid within the GIDC area. Sources close to the development said that the water from the Sanand GIDC will be released into a waterbody or a nearby river.
With numerous multinational companies and its recent emergence as the country’s semiconductor centre, GIDC is developing Sanand GIDC as an exemplary industrial estate. Shah noted, “Better infrastructure will help industry grow faster, and we are working with GIDC for infrastructure development.”
Shah further said that they proposed to utilise unplanned land within GIDC to develop a fully integrated township. “The vision includes essential facilities such as a hospital, school, mall, garden, and other amenities to create a self-sufficient ecosystem that supports industries, workers, and their families. This initiative aims to enhance the quality of life in the area, attract more investments, and further bolster the region’s industrial growth,” he added.
