Woman dupes widower of Rs 9L with marriage proposal

Ahmedabad: A garment trader from the Ellisbridge area filed a complaint with the police on Thursday, accusing a woman and her sister of stealing cash and valuables worth Rs 9 lakh during a stay at his home over marriage discussion.
The complainant stated in the FIR with Ellisbridge police that he is a widower who lost his wife in Sep 2024 and was looking to remarry. He recently came across an advertisement in a vernacular newspaper about a marriage proposal and contacted a woman from Rajasthan.
The complainant said that the woman from Rajasthan showed interest in marrying him, saying that her husband died in a road accident. On Dec 22, she told him that she would come and meet him. The complainant was convinced by her and told her that she could come and stay at his home.
The complainant stated in the FIR that the woman, who talked with him, along with her sister, came to his house on Jan 1. He said that both women slept in his house, and he went out to his shop on the afternoon of Jan 1.
While he was outside, the woman he was seeing for marriage told him to bring a medicine for her. The complainant said that he searched for the medicine for a while but did not find it. He returned home in the evening, and the women were ready to leave. They told the complainant that they were supposed to leave to Jaipur on the evening of Jan 1.
He dropped both women at the Ahmedabad railway junction and returned home. When he went to his home, he checked the bedroom where both women slept and found Rs 8.50 lakh in cash and ornaments worth Rs 20,000 missing. He called the woman he was considering for marriage and asked why she stole money from his house. She immediately disconnected the phone and went incommunicado.
He approached Ellisbridge police and filed a complaint of theft in a dwelling house and abetment under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against the two women.
