Ahmedabad: A 46-year-old rickshaw driver from Naroda was allegedly cheated of Rs 8 lakh after being lured with promise of a job for his son in the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). Sailesh Patni filed a complaint with Shaherkotda police against the accused, Naresh Parmar, a resident of Visnagar on Tuesday. Naresh allegedly promised to get Sailesh’s 23-year-old son Chirag, who works as a nurse at LG Hospital, a job as “multi-tasking staffer (MTS)” in the ICG. It was Sailesh’s brother-in-law’s relative who had introduced him and Chirag to Naresh in Jan 2023. Convinced that Naresh would get his son the job, Sailesh agreed to pay him Rs 8 lakh. He handed over Rs 2 lakh to Naresh near Galaxy Cinema in Naroda in Feb and paid the remaining Rs 6 lakh in several instalments. Naresh allegedly sent him counterfeit confirmation letter via email and WhatsApp. He then instructed the family to obtain police verification and medical fitness certificates for Chirag to make the offer look credible. Later, Naresh sent them the schedule for ICG training from April 30 to May 15, 2024. He later said the training had been deferred and began making excuses when asked why an appointment letter was not being issued. The fraud was uncovered when Sailesh learned that other family members had also been deceived by him similarly using forged documents. Shaherkotda police have registered a complaint of cheating, forgery and impersonation under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). A senior police official said the investigation is on and further steps will depend on evidence such as email and WhatsApp records.
