A 25-year-old woman called the Abhayam 181 women helpline on Thursday to report harassment by her mother and family members. The woman, a resident of an eastern city area, was in love with a youth for the past 14 years. They waited for the families’ nod for marriage for three years, but when they did not get consent from the girl’s family, they married secretly seven months ago, said a counsellor. The couple was on their way to the police station to seek protection when the woman’s family attacked them and forcibly took the woman away. On Thursday, the woman tried to flee and unite with her husband. The family, including the mother, tried to dissuade the woman even at the police station after an Abhayam team reached the spot. They were counselled, and the couple was reunited.
